i.e. vs. e.g.

Abbreviation of the 
Latin phrase ‘id est,’ 
which means ‘that is.’

Used when further explanation 
is forthcoming.

Example: The award ceremony will 
be held at the Raddison, i.e., the downtown location.

Abbreviation of the 
Latin phrase ‘exempli gratia,’ 
which means ‘for example.’

Used when offering examples, 
but not a full list.
Example: Daily use of vitamins can be beneficial for joints, e.g., Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc
